Postively engaging area youth is very important to us at Great Skates! For this reason, we have chosen to focus on two major community outreach themes:
Skate Don't Hate and Great Skates Loves Literacy.
Skate Don't Hate
At Great Skates we are always seeking to encourage others in the safe and healthy activity of skating! Skating is something in which individuals can excel at their own pace, in an inclusive and non-competitive environment. For these reasons, skating is an excellent sport to help build confidence! Skate Don’t Hate is not just a program or event. It is a mentality. Continuous reiteration of this theme reminds everyone that they come to Great Skates to skate and NOT to hate. It is our hope that this anti-bullying message is carried with our patrons when they leave our facility.
To further this theme, Great Skates is pleased to partner with Central Maine Derby each year to co-host the annual Skate Don’t Hate event! This event promotes awareness and raises funding for bullying prevention education! This event is held on the World Day of Bullying Prevention; the first Monday in October each year. To show their support, participants wear blue. Admissions are donated to Stomp Out Bullying, Project Aware, and Central Maine Derby’s Skate Don’t Hate Program.
Great Skates Loves Literacy
Great Skates supports literacy in our area in a number of ways. One way is through our new "donate your party" program. This program provides a $1 off per person discount as incentive for birthday parties to choose to "donate" their party to charity. The way it works is simple. The birthday boy or girl asks party guests to bring school supplies as donations for the Penquis Back to School Drive instead of presents. Great Skates delivers the donations, and offers the $1 per person discount as a reward for his or her generosity.
Another way that we like to show our support for literacy is by supporting local summer reading programs. Great Skates is pleased to provide free admission passes to local libraries to use as incentives and rewards in their summer reading programs! If your summer reading program does not currently receive free passes from us, please ask the director of the program to contact us!
Lastly, we like to support literacy through on-site literacy events, such as the 2013 Dr. Seuss Day! This event featured a book swap, free read aloud, free face-painting, free activity sheets, prizes, and our walls were papered with inspirational Dr. Seuss quotes! Be on the look out for our next literacy event!
